SOCIAL MEDIA

While social media manager has never been my role, therefore I have never designed a post, with my time as both the AWE and EIC, I have closely monitored and helped plan the content posted on our Instagram. After taking a social media marketing course my junior year, I learned some helpful tips for gaining popularity, like precision with posting times and creating our content around our audience's interests. It's part of my role as the EIC to make sure our publication thrives, and in order to do so, we have to maintain a stable number of viewers.

Person Behind the Pin & Humans of CK

While feature stories are always a great way to highlight people, we also do the same through social media. Person Behind the Pin is a mini feature that focuses on an interesting pin someone has either on their bag or clothing. However, it has evolved into any object or item that someone has that looks like it has a story behind it.

For this spotlight, a reporter will go out and interview someone about their item, searching for a mini story through it. To go along with the source's quote, the reporter will take a photo of them with their object.

Humans of CK is much like PBP, however, it focuses more on the person and what they enjoy. Whether it be a hobby they do or an achievement they've won, Humans of CK helps to highlight students at our high school.

"Well, my mom actually got it for me because I also have a tendency to say sorry a lot and I am awkward. So my mom thought of me and got it for me. So I put it on my computer."

"In music, you get to express yourself a lot and I think that's really fun for me. I just really love music in general, and I feel like it always takes me on a journey, specifically I like the violin. One because you get to play up high and that's always fun and most of the time, violins have the melody or the theme and that's what I really like about most music."

New Stories

When a story gets published to our website, we take the opportunity to post about it on social media. Since Instagram is home to a lot of people, these posts help drive more traffic to our website, informing more people about what we do.

Scholastic Journalism Week

Each day of the scholastic journalism week we post about it to spread awareness and celebrate student journalism as a whole. Some people may not see the work we do as significant; however, we are here to prove that student journalists have an impact on the communities they are within.

Fun Posts

While the majority of things we post have a purpose, sometimes we like to post things just for fun. Last year, we posted pictures of what Goober did over spring break, which served no purpose other than to keep viewers engaged. It's important that our publication's social media stays professional, however, it's necessary to find a healthy balance between serious and silly.

Puzzle Solutions

After each magazine issue we wait a few weeks before we post the solutions to the puzzles included in that issue.

Trips, Ceremonies, & Team Bonding

A good chunk of our time is spent connecting with one another through events and activities. To hopefully draw interest in our program, we like to post about all the fun things we do.

Each JEA/NSPA National Convention, all the time spent outside the convention is filled with exploration and lots of shopping. Throughout the year our program hands out different awards, so we make sure to highlight that on social media too.

After school hours we partake in bonding activities to help build healthy relations between staffers. Things like Secret Santa, magazine unboxing, and get-togethers are all part of being a Cougar Chronicle reporter.

These posts are usually the ones to receive the highest amount of likes and comments, as people are interested in the trips we go on, events we partake in, and staffers we shout-out.
