REPORTING & WRITING
This section holds a variety of my work. From local debate coverage to sporting events, I have done my best to cover it all. The point of journalism is to use your ability to tell stories, and through my four years in the program, I've written many articles that show it. In each category, I have selected some of my best work that not only shows my capabilities as a writer, but my passion for reporting.
The beauty of feature stories is the way they highlight people who otherwise wouldn't be heard, shedding light on a perspective that wasn't obvious to see. Each time I interview someone for a feature, I watch all the pieces fall into place as if they had been waiting for this moment to occur. These types of stories make me feel accomplished as I'm able to show my audience the unique and moving things that are happening right beneath their noses. In this section, you will see my best stories that dive deeper than what's seen on the surface, uncovering the impactful moments in everyday life.
If there is one type of article that always keeps me engaged while writing, it's news. One main aspect of news stories is the research that acts as the foundation of the article, ready to back up any statements and claims made. While not all news articles are investigative, I enjoy ones that are. When I have to dig for the story, finding information from a variety of sources and piecing it all together, the feeling when it's complete is beyond rewarding. Through these selected stories, you will find what best highlights my strengths as a journalist, diving into coverage both local and statewide.
When writing journalistically, we are taught to remain neutral, not inserting our ideas or thoughts into the story. However, the one time we can express what we think and show the readers a little bit about ourselves is through opinion stories. Not only are we given creative freedom in this section of journalism, but the chance to make change within our community by expressing how we feel about specific topics. The importance of journalism is to tell stories, lift voices, and at the same time spark change when needed. In this section, you'll uncover stories that reveal both personal opinion and truth, some adding another voice to issues and others communicating lighthearted information.
While I'm personally not a big fan of watching sports, being able to cover them as a journalist is a unique experience. Not only am I able to highlight the game but show each player's achievements and dedication they have to their sport. What I've noticed through the coverage I've done is the appreciation from both the players and coaches when I show up to report. For me, I'm reminded of how important my job as a journalist is. In this section, you'll see a mix of traditional sports coverage and articles demonstrating key aspects of the team.
